“Zero sugar” is one of the first things customers notice about Jimmy’s Vegan Cookies, but what does it actually mean?

At Jimmy’s Vegan, transparency is part of our company formula C=QT²™ (Commitment to Quality, Taste and Transparency). We want customers to understand not only what our products contain, but also how to read the complete Nutrition Facts label when deciding whether a food fits their individual needs.

What Does “Zero Sugar” Mean?

Under U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeling rules, terms such as “zero sugar,” “sugar-free” and “no sugar” may be used when a food contains less than 0.5 grams of sugars per reference amount customarily consumed and per labeled serving.

In other words, a declaration of 0g sugar represents a regulated labeling threshold. It does not necessarily mean that a product contains a mathematically absolute zero amount of every type of sugar-related ingredient. Learn more about FDA sugar-free labeling requirements.

Zero Sugar Does Not Mean Zero Carbohydrates

Total Sugars, Added Sugars and Total Carbohydrate are different lines on the Nutrition Facts label:

  • Total Sugars include naturally occurring sugars and added sugars present in one serving.

  • Added Sugars are sugars added during processing, including ingredients such as table sugar, syrups, honey and certain concentrated fruit juices.

  • Total Carbohydrate is a broader measurement that can include sugars, dietary fiber, starches and sugar alcohols.

This means a food can contain 0g sugar while still containing carbohydrates, calories, fat, fiber and protein. The FDA recommends reviewing the entire Nutrition Facts label, not one claim by itself, to make an informed choice. Learn about Total and Added Sugars from the FDA.

How Are Jimmy’s Vegan Cookies Sweetened?

Jimmy’s Vegan Cookies were created for people seeking a more intentional way to enjoy a nutritional snacking without conventional added sugar.

Our current recipes use Stevia Nectar and Fructo-Oligosaccharides, commonly called FOS, as part of the sweetening system. The vegan dark chocolate chips in the current recipes contain maltitol, which is a sugar alcohol- favored by dentist for not promoting cavities.

Sugar alcohols are carbohydrates used to provide sweetness with fewer calories per gram than traditional sugar. They are absorbed differently from conventional sugar and generally produce a smaller change in blood glucose than other carbohydrates. However, individual responses can vary.

Because sugar alcohols are not completely absorbed, they may also cause gas, bloating or diarrhea in some individuals, especially when consumed in larger amounts. Customers who are sensitive to sugar alcohols should review the complete ingredient list and consider their individual tolerance. Read the FDA’s explanation of sugar alcohols.

Why Serving Size Still Matters

Zero sugar should not be interpreted as “unlimited.”

One Jimmy’s Vegan Cookie is individually wrapped and represents a clearly identified serving. Current product information also lists 6g of dietary fiber per cookie. However, customers should still review:

  • Serving size
  • Calories
  • Total carbohydrates
  • Dietary fiber
  • Sugar alcohols
  • Total and saturated fat
  • Protein
  • Ingredients and allergens

People managing diabetes or another medical condition should consider the entire Nutrition Facts label and follow the individualized recommendations of their healthcare professional. Glucose and digestive responses can differ from one person to another.

A More Transparent Kind of Treat

Jimmy’s Vegan Cookies are zero-sugar, gluten-free, vegan and keto-friendly created for people seeking choices that better reflect their dietary preferences and wellness goals.

Our zero-sugar claim is one important part of the product, but it is not the whole nutritional story. We believe customers deserve the complete picture so they can make informed choices with confidence.

That is what Quality, Taste and Transparency mean to us.
